The Still is constructed throughout of resistance glass and has been designed to give a high grade water distillate at a low cost.
Water entering the still first passes through the coiled condenser tube where it is preheated to about 70°C. Slight deposits are taken up in the pumice container before water enters the boiling flask, thus facilitating the cleaning of the apparatus. The specially designed baffle in the stillhead prevents any carry over of water splashes with the steam, and the wide bore of the up sloping tube connecting the stillhead with condenser eliminates any back-pressure. The steam condenses mainly in the coiled condenser tube but a small amount emerges from the side tube, carrying with it the greater proportion of carbon dioxide and other gases evolved during billing. As the still is constructed throughout of resistance glass, practically no ionisable material contaminates the distillate, for maximum life and to minimise possible breakage a wire gauze should be interposed between burner and flask.
Note: Two stills may be used for double distillation, in which case the distillate from the first unit is fed directly into the constant level pot of the second unit, each unit should be equipped with its own seperate water supply. It is also possible for distillation to be carried out on already - distilled water employing a 2 or 3 litre flask with standard ground joint but without constant level device
